I've been theorycrafting a vampire necromancer build that will use bleeds, life drains, and condition manipulation that will be my main character at launch. I'm not really sure which race would be best though, or if race will even matter. I mean, I know it matters for your personal story, but will any of the races have special abilities / attributes that would pair best with specific build types?

Each race has their own set of utility skills, however they have not all been revealed yet. They should all have the same general abilities with their skills so their won't be a race that does nothing with conditions, but there could be one that works best with conditions. Nothing else will be impacted by race choice, so if you already have picked a bunch of necromancer utility skills you like you can play any race.
Crossing Tyria Where I spend most of my time.
I say play the race YOU want. Often, racial benefits are only usefull in the early levels, and then you got like 90 hours of gameplay stuck with a race you kinda dislike... GW2 is all about choices, and playing the game the way YOU want to play it. So do that :)
Looking for a mature relaxed and fun guild with vent or TS
I will play as Asura, partly to be the small guy that is hard to see, and party to be a twisted version of Yoda jumping around turning into a floating smoke skull and puking all over people :)

Asura all the way. One second you are 3 feet tall - the next you're a giant green Lich monster!
Uh but for your case specifically, you mentioned a vampire theme, I think that would fit best with the more human-looking races (Human, Norn, Sylvari). Considering specific race skills, I've heard (read: rumor) of a couple for those 3 races.
I heard Humans can get a spell that summons hellhounds, Norn can choose to shapeshift to their spirit animal, and Asura can summon a temporary Golem vehicle. These spells will probably be only one of several you can choose from though. Just something to mull over as you plan.
Human suits me well for necro, but Asura is great too becose of fun "yoda" factor varkeer mentioned :)
I really do agree with you.
People should pick a race they can maybe relate to or they find the most interesting.
And not try to just get ahead on a game they kinda don't know much about. thoughts?

I'm choosing charr for purely cosmetic reasons. They look so awesome!!
Because I'm worth it.
I'm going Sylvari ... odd choice I know but I think I'm going to like the juxtaposition of a tree-hugger w/ a death dealer ^^
@Feramoan
Not so odd, if you've read the first GW2 book...
Of the racials I've seen so far I've seen several useful ones for necro's. The different human ones are intriguing (shadow form with AE cripples and conditions; turning into a giant tree creature with AE roots, and other various attacks as well as a purify ability; the hell hound pets etc.)
I do like the stealth afforded by the Norn Snow leopard form however...
Lol i will be a very small guardian.... :)
But i think the races doesnt matter that much.
@sylvinstar - Indeed, Killeen is my favorite character in the GW2 books so far.
As for race / profession combos, the way I look at is that if you already know which profession you want to play, the main consideration for race will be more about personal story, the cosmetic look of your character, and which maps you experience first at lower levels. While some of the racial abilities in the last beta looked interesting, they seemed to be more about adding some 'cultural flavor' to a build rather than being something you'd want to center your whole PvE build on.
@ Sardu -
I agree. As is usual for most of these types of games, racials are never something to base your whole character on unless it is to add some depth to your personal backstory or because you like the look and or utillity of it. I try to look at what basic things a class does very well, and what things it does poorly or can't do at all and then decide if a racial is going to lessen a shortcoming or strengthen an already strong aspect of the class (hence my comments about the Snow Leopard invisibility). Racials are rarely a make or break at high level - I am sure there are games out there where this is not true, but as a general rule...
From what I currently understand there are no ( or not supposed to be ) any profession that is going to get boosted by any race. If anything that would make the most sense to me. No one would want to HAVE to be a char to be the best engineer or an asura to be the best elementalist. I read this on a thread from the devs once and I haven't heard anything against it from the beta.
Anyhing skinny, deathly, and at least regular height (hah!!)
