GW2 Game Giveaway - Sky Pirates of Tyria!

June 24, 2013 - 9:09am -- Xerin
GW2 Game Giveaway - Sky Pirates of Tyria!

Tyria is in trouble, a new faction called the Aetherblades has arrived and they’re wreaking havoc on the Dragon Bash and Tyria is in desperate need of heroes to face this challenge! That’s why we’ve been graced with ten copies of the game, each including 800 free gems (to try out some of the awesome new steampunk themed gear which you can see on our update overview), to give to potential adventurers to help defend Lion’s Arch and Tyria from not only the Aetherblades, but the Elder Dragons as well!

So grab your adventurer’s sword and shield (or closest pocketwatch) and get ready to enter our steampunk themed contest. The rules are simple. Between now and July 1st, 2013 register for our site and comment below answering one of the following questions (you only have to answer one!):

  •  What’s your favorite steampunk game and why you love it (ex. Skies of Arcadia, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, BioShock, or even Dishonored).
  • What’s your favorite steampunk movie / TV show / book and why you love it (ex. Golden Compass, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Van Helsing, etc.).
  • What’s your favorite Jules Verne novel?
  • What’s your favorite part of the Victorian era?
  • Why you can’t wait to hop into GW2 and take on the Aetherblades yourself!

When we say steampunk, we’re using the loose translation of the word, so feel free to be creative! Valid entries will be picked at random on July 1st, 2013 to and codes will be distributed via email.

You must register to enter and be over the legal age of entry for your country of residence.

To get things started, my favorite steampunk like game is probably Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. It’s in the same vein as Fallout (similar engine and similar developers) and focuses on the aspect of technology vs. magic. In the game, technology follows physical law while magic bends physical law to get the same result. The two are incompatible and it has one of the most interesting and well thought out game worlds for the era.

So share your comment below for your chance to win your very own copy of Guild Wars 2. We all hop to see you in Tyria soon!

As a reminder, you must be registered in order to enter.

Guns of Icarus is a damn cool team based airship game, awesome to play with friends.

Favourite Steampunk book series would have to be to be the Mortal Engines series. Awesome world with cities on wheels engulfing other cities to survive.

Love the new skins in the aetherblade update, and the new dungeon looks cool. I'm most looking forward to these.

Steampunk game - Bioshock due to the aesthetics of the game and how it looked

Steampunk movie - The Mechanical Grave - The unique way that intricate individuals of the past are portrayed in a linear way compared to our time line. Plus Edgar Allen Poe's unique look as a mechanical investigator was interesting.

Steampunk book - Clockwork Princess (Infernal Devices) by Cassandra Clare  - The way that automatons were written is unique compared to how they're usually seen as machinery with voices coexisting to service humans.

Jules Verne novel - A Journey to the Center of the Earth - The full idea of the actual journey was always intriguing.

Favorite part of the Victorian Era - Aside from the fashion, which was beginning to take an interesting turn at that time from full petticoats, corsets, and layers, the gadgetry and weapons were taking on a wider range of creativity. Some of the stranger weaponry appeared at this time, such as the round barreled hand-held gun and pistols that have no trigger until you've cocked the hammer. Steam machinery also played a heavy hand in the technology that was created in this time, playing a strong part in how even the commoners' lives were affected.

Why I can't wait to take on the Aetherblades - I'm excited to see how their mechanical devices are going to compare to mine, and I can't wait to see the vehicles and machinery that are introduced due to them.

Arcanum is probably one of the greatest games that's ever been made for the PC--no joke. The voice acting was top notch, the setting was fantastic, and it was terribly balanced in really amusing ways. Reverse-pickpocketing dynamite and grenades into peoples' pockets for instakills was almost as amusing as running around with a flamethrower and an army of spider bots.

My favorite Steampunk TV show is definitely The Legend of Korra.  The writers decided to evolve their world and progress it into a steampunk atmosphere. In this universe the a good number of the denizens have elemental powers (known as benders) and these "attunements" largely dictate what professions are taken.  For example, those attuned to Fire generate electricity for the city by casting lightning onto batteries (sadly, Air magic in tLoK doesn't produce lightning like it does in GW2).  Earth benders are commonly police that bend metals and use it for incapacitating and arresting criminals.  It's quite a fun show!

What’s your favorite Jules Verne novel?

Journey to the Center of the Earth. I loved the whole journey from start to finish, and all the creatures and plants they came across along the way. Obviously outdated and proven wrong but it's still a wonderfully whimsical fantasy story, and it feels very optimistic on Verne's part to dream up a whole other world under our feet.

Favorite Game-Guns of Icarus-Because it is a really good concept and the game is fun aswell as replayable.

Favouite Movie- Van Helsing- Because I like the sort of films that involve supernatural beings such as vampires and demons, ect. and the effects are decent and the storyline ain't too shabby.

Favorite Jules Verne Novel- Only read 2 of his books( well 1.5) and I would say Journey to the Centre of the Earth is the best out of the 1.5 books I read because I finished that one whereas Paris in the 20th century didn't really interest me.

Favorite part of the Victorian Era- Was of course the industrial revolution!

Why I want Atherblades in GW2- I really like the aromour that will go well with mr Engi main and the rapier for my Mesmer, but also I can't wait to do the new JP and dungeon, the caches look fun aswell.

Favorite Game

I'm not much into steampunk but I have to agree with you about Arcanum It's a grand game with interesting skill choices, character options, background story and lore in general.
Definitely one of my favorite RPGs that I had the pleasure to play.

Never finished it though, it was too tough for me back then, maybe it's time to dig it up and have another go? :D

Good luck to all participants!

ArenaNet has done an exemplary job at crossing genre boundaries in Guild Wars 2 while still remaining true to the core aesthetic.  Right from character creation we get to see how they fluently combined the traditional medieval fantasy of the Humans, industrial revolution in the Charr, even science fiction with the Asura!  The final dungeon in the Flame and Frost living story demonstrated how flexible these combinations are made to be when we saw an interesting and unique combination of technology between the Dredge and the Flame Legion.

I'm extremely excited about the Aetherblades because we'll get to see ArenaNet cross yet another genre borderline.  Everyone loves a good steampunking, and it's a stylization that's been surprisingly absent from Guild Wars 2 thus far (close, perhaps, but no cigar).  I hope to see influences from the Aetherblades permeate into other aspects of the game, and that we'll get to see the steampunk aesthetic used more throughout Tyria in days to come.

I enjoyed Dishonored and BioShock. The atmosphere of both game is just unique and I hope that other developers will use the steampunk as genre. I am sure that many players will be happy about the new event and its steampunk genre.

I already have the game so I'll let someone else win this one, but any news on the PvP Screenshot giveaway from before?

It seems to have been buried under all this dragon bash and sky pirate stuff. It's been almost two weeks since the contest ended and we still haven't heard anything about it.

Every single forum I've used to spread anti guardian propaganda has subsequently died out on me. Coincidence? I think not!

My favorite steampunk trilogy is His Dark Materials by Pullman. It was one of the first books I read that opened me up to different ways of thinking, especially coming from a firmly Christian family. I enjoyed the technology of the universe, especially reading about Lee Scoresby's airship. Also, while not steampunk, Iorek had some pretty cool scenes in the movie adaptation.

My favourite steampunk movie is Van Helsing because I like the type of movies that represent old times and make me think that in the old days I needed to learn how to kill because there were creatures in the past that humans need to fight to survive.

Best game is hands down the original Biochock. It's actually my favorite game ever and I really don't care what others say. The atmosphere, the premise of the ruined city underwater is just amazing. And that plot twist, my god. I'm not gonna spoil it for anyone who hasn't played it yet, but i really urge you to play it. I do miss the little sisters in bioshock infinite though, never killed a single one of them in Biochock 1 and 2.

I like cheese.. XD
