The End of the WvW Spring Season 2014

First I would simply like to say congratulations to Jade Quarry, Henge of Denravi, Gate of Madness, Seafarer’s Rest, Gandara and Dzagonur for coming in first for each of your respective leagues and regions. Enjoy those victories and all the loot those tickets will get you. Try to go easy on us with the bragging, eh?

I can’t speak for anyone else but I know that the Gold League was mixed with all kinds of emotions. Jade Quarry coming out as a victor was quite a surprise to anyone who had been throwing around predictions prior to the season start. Everyone expected Blackgate to win and to see them not even hit top three is a total surprise to anyone who watches WvW.

What happened? An alliance occurred between Jade Quarry and Tarnished Coast to throw out all the predictions for the top ranks and prove that this is a game with still a lot of different outcomes. I go into more about it on this article here. This alliance has changed the nature of the game and you can bet there will be more of these types of dealings and backroom alliances popping up in the coming months. I wouldn’t be surprised that by the next tournament we see servers completely changed in the rankings.

Some people say that these alliances are completely unfair and take away from the fun of the game. World vs. World was introduced as a casual introduction to PvP and to see this hardcore dealings to get to the top is the exact thing they want to avoid. Everyone sees enough of this in hardcore games like League of Legends or Counter-Strike. Having these alliances and dealings in this place takes away from the enjoyment of the game, in their eyes, and even more so when the only other WvW option has been reduced to an item and karma farm.

In the other hand I have never seen more server pride when it comes to rankings and some commanders have been raised to a celebrity status. This culture is clearly popular or we wouldn’t see these new and exciting things constantly pop up to surprise us all. New tactics means that there is still much to this game that we can explore and, if ArenaNet can take advantage of this popularity, they can certainly keep us trying to figure out new ways to come out ahead.

At the very least there should be some changes to how scoring is done in the future. This whole alliance sparked because of the fact that Sea of Sorrows was getting second place despite their matches while Jade Quarry and Tarnished Coast would have been placed much lower. Hopefully this, and the sheer scoring differences for the other servers, will spur some changes for scoring in the future matches.

Regardless this was an exciting season. We saw a lot of new aspects added into this season to keep us all on our toes. If the guys at ArenaNet continue to develop and enhance WvW then I know I will be sucked into this experience for some time, yet.

Oh and just for the record: Tarnished Coast for life.
