This week Bungie has let loose some details regarding their upcoming MMOFPS Destiny. As a long time Halo player I of course was interested in the news and watched it all closely. What I found was Bungie highlighting some features ArenaNet had mentioned before launch. Ideas I just can’t get out of my mind.
On an average day, after you subtract work and sleep, I get about 4-6 hours of time I could spend in front of my pc at home (aka “The Guild Wars Box”). Take out time for my daughter and homely duties, I get maybe an hour or so a day to spend in game. On the flip side I spend every waking moment with my smartphone.
The reveal of Destiny had a lot of things in it, but the one my mind keeps wandering back to is the preview clips of the mobile app. They showed off the character sheet, and push notifications, and response to friends in game. Well before launch of Guild Wars 2 we saw preview shots of similar sorts of features dubbed “the extended experience.”
Some people have connected some dots and it looks like staff shuffling at ArenaNet and a possible change in priorities has caused the extended experience to go from a headline feature to a back burner pipe dream. I’m not saying I disagree with that prioritization, there are a lot of things that the core game needs, and is hopefully getting soon, but I can’t shake the feeling we are missing something amazing. Maybe not something necessary, but something amazing.
It’s a confluence of reasons that are pushing this idea to the forefront of my mind. First, as I explained above, I just don’t get as much PC time these days as I would like, and getting to dip my toes into the game from anywhere coughworkcough would be, in a word, awesome. Second, I can’t help but let my mind wander after the Destiny reveal about what could have been. The ability to ping and message friends in game would be awesome. Especially if you are in a WvW guild that relies on communication at all times to succeed.
Even seemingly silly stuff would be awesome to have at my fingertips. Just getting to review builds and theorycraft is great. Yes there are websites, but it’s not the same as looking at your character and your gear (something blizzard does extremely well in Diablo III and WoW). I could list features all day, and that’s why I can’t shake this thought. There is simply so much untapped potential in this space, and it would be a shame to see Bungie capitalize on something ArenaNet promised 2 years before (nothing against Bungie).
The Gathering Storm is coming soon, and this “small” patch has turned out to be quite a big one. So even if it’s impractical to dream, it would be amazing if we started hearing more about the extended experience. My busy schedule (and overactive imagination) would surely appreciate it.
